International cooperation is important to understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems work and to ensure that AI systems are developed in a way that respects the rule of law, human rights, democratic values, and diversity.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) have a unique opportunity to lead discussions on approaches to designing AI development in a trusted and human-centered way. A group of IGOs with complementary mandates doing relevant AI policy work have come together in the Globalpolicy.AI initiative to help policymakers and the public navigate the international AI governance landscape and access the knowledge, tools, data, and best practices needed to develop AI policy.

Building on the launch of the Globalpolicy.AI initiative in September 2021, this 2022 RightsCon panel on “Globalpolicy.AI: Promoting the development and implementation of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence” sparked a lively debate on how we can collectively seize the opportunities and address the challenges of AI technologies. 

The session was structured as follows: 

• Introduction of the Globalpolicy.AI initiative, currently involving eight intergovernmental organisations (the Council of Europe, European Commission, European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, Inter-American Development Bank, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the World Bank Group). 
• Discussion among IGO representatives about the importance of trustworthy AI and how Globalpolicy.AI is contributing – and will contribute to the future – to its advancement, including a brief presentation of possible future Globalpolicy.AI projects. 
• Open dialogue between panelists and audience focused on how IGOs can strengthen cooperation and leverage each other’s work to achieve common goals for trustworthy, human-centered AI.
